Cytology

The cytology laboratory is a full-service laboratory staffed by ASCP certified cytotechnologists with a combined total of 50 years experience and an assistant to prepare the specimens. The laboratory utilizes ThinPrep processing for non-gynecologic and gynecologic specimens, but will accept conventional Pap smears as well. HPV testing by in situ hybridization is offered, as is testing for chlamydiae and gonorrhea from the ThinPrep vial. The cytotechnologists attend fine needle aspirations of both superficial and deep (image-assisted) lesions. Adequacy can be assessed at the time of aspiration. Three board certified cytopathologists, Drs. Sanders, Forouhar, and Hegde, render diagnoses on all cytology cases. Cell blocks and immunohistochemistry are made to aid in the diagnosis of malignancy. The laboratory is open Monday through Friday from 8:00-4:30 although a pathologist is on call at all times.
