Surgical Pathology

The surgical pathology service is staffed by five full-time anatomic pathologists with a range of specialty interests. Specialty interests include breast and gynecologic pathology including placental pathology (Dr. Sanders), gastrointestinal and liver pathology (Dr. Forouhar), uropathology including renal biopsy pathology (Dr. Yamase), endocrine pathology (Dr. Hegde) and neuropathology (Dr. Wu). Biopsies received in the department prior to noon can be available for same day signout or will be completed the following morning, unless additional studies are needed. Larger cases needing fixation may take 2 days to complete. The surgical pathology office is staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (860) 679-2980 but a pathologist is on call at all times through the page operator (860) 679-2626. Frozen sections are performed in the main operating room suite or in the department.
